Hyperhidrosis & Sweaty Palms

Solutions to Excessive Sweating

Excessive and abnormal sweating is a serious difficult medical condition for millions of people worldwide. Having Hyperhidrosis means your body's normal self-cooling mechanism is overactive. Sweaty palms and feet, drenched shirts, dripping foreheads and embarrassing sweat rings under your arms affect just about every aspect of your life - both social and professional.

Although some mild-level sufferers are able to manage with topical RX-strength antiperspirants, Dr. Zaks uses a much more effective treatment when you find low-level solutions inadequate and want to get your sweat levels down to normal.

This recent and most appreciated treatment for underarm sweat reduction is through the use of localized Botox injections. (Botox is frequently use for relaxing frown muscles on the forehead.) Dr. Zaks was interviewed by KNX 1070 AM on the day Botox was FDA approved for hyperhidrosis.

The results, particularly with Botox, are so dramatic and the life changing that patients experience are truly heart warming." - Dr. David Pariser, President and Founding Member of the International Hyperhidrosis Society.

Options for Treatment

Antiperspirants

Antiperspirants have long been the first line of treatment because they are the least invasive and experts recommend that they be tried first. Over the counter antiperspirants contain various levels of ingredients that work to block the sweat glands.

Prescription antiperspirants such as Drysol, contain higher levels of active ingredients and can be used on most areas of the body.

What does Botox feel like?

If antiperspirants don't give you the control you need, then Botox is an excellent highly effective solution. Botox works by turning off the signals to the nerves that instruct the sweat glands to go into action. Injections are placed in the sweat producing areas in the armpit.

Sweat reduction is noticeable in 2 to 4 days and

substantial within 2 weeks after the first injection.

The duration of effectivenessis is up 12 months. Results are proven in long term studies. Injections in both underarms takes about 20 minutes - pain is minimal.

Iontophoresis

Iontophoresis uses water to conduct a mild electrical current through the skin’s surface. It’s not entirely understood how or why iontophoresis works, but it’s believed that the electric current and mineral particles in the water work together to microscopically thicken the outer layer of the skin, which blocks the flow of sweat to the skin’s surface. Once this sweat output is blocked or interrupted, sweat production on the palms and soles is, often suddenly and dramatically, “turned off.”

Oral Medications

Dr. Zaks does not recommend oral medication for hyperhidrosis. Potential side effects are too serious for long term use to be practical. Effectiveness is unproven.

Surgery

A variety of invasive and complicated surgical approaches have been used to treat severe sweating, but they are usually reserved for the most severe cases that do not respond to any other treatments.

Satisfied Patient - and Skilled Doctor

Dr. Zaks takes special satisfaction when patients who have suffered from Hyperhidrosis for years discover an essentially "new" life once their condition is under control.

What most people take for granted - the simple application of an antiperspirant to control sweating, - is an absolute joy for a Hyperhidrosis sufferer. Botox has taken a previously unmanageable body function and transformed it into a normal one.

Dr. Zaks is listed in the International Hyperhidrosis Society's Physician Resource Guide. A physician must have attended intensive hyperhidrosis continuing medical education programs to receive a special designation in the Physician Finder
